Thaksin Shinawatra lost clout

From the moment Thaksin fled, his status changed from accused to criminal. There is no question in anyone’s mind he is on the run. The only task now is Thaksin must prove his case.

Proving his case will be difficult in that the Thai courts have done a very good job about being public and open. With the reading of  decisions and findings, it leaves little doubt in anyone’s mind that the courts made the right call based on the evidence that was presented. There is no pattern Thaksin can cite that would show bias against him.

Thaksin will have to prove his case in the United Kingdom courts that his trial was being tainted. However the only tainting thus far cost 3 of his lawyers six months in jail for an attempted bribe.

The word of a former Prime Minister does carry a certain amount of clout and weight. However the word of a bail jumping man on the run carries only a small fraction of a former Prime Minister.

By running, Thaksin became greatly diminished in the eyes of the world. He must now fight this new self imposed stigmatism. This is very different than his self imposed exile after the 2006 coup. After the coup Thaksin was not facing trial. That makes a huge difference in the eyes of the world.
